Man found hanging was due in court on rape charge

A MAN found hanging in Uphill was due to appear in court on a charge of rape on the day he died, the Mercury can reveal.

The body of Kenneth Howe, aged 75, was discovered by a member of the public in a monument at the Old Church of St Nicholas on May 5.

On the same day, the Uphill North Road resident was due to appear before magistrates at North Somerset Courthouse.

He was charged on 10 counts of rape and seven counts of indecent assault on two girls between 1975 and 1982.

An inquest into his death opened yesterday (Thurs), with a hearing expected to take place next month.
