A WESTON man has been put behind bars after a failed attempt at robbing a newsagents in the town at knife-point.

The crime occurred at Sue’s News in Milton Road on November 6, and a police hunt was launched.

Cona Elliss, aged 22, and of Trelissick Gardens in Locking Castle, was arrested on November 21 in connection with the incident.

Elliss entered the shop with a knife but the would-be robber made off empty-handed after the quick-thinking shop worker set off an alarm.

Elliss was later arrested after a police appeal, when officers circulated CCTV footage of the incident.

He first appeared before North Somerset Courthouse on November 24 and was charged with attempting to rob Rita Takyar of cash from the newsagents and possession of a knife in a public place.

He appeared before a judge at Bristol Crown Court on January 9 and was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
