A man has had to be freed after becoming stuck in mud this afternoon (Sunday).

Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Burnham beach at about 12.30pm when a man had called 999 after becoming trapped facing an incoming tide.

The crew, with help from Burnham Area Rescue Boat (BARB) was able to reach the man without using specialist equipment and help him free of the mud.

A spokesman said: “We quickly headed onto the beach with BARB following along towards the smallest pier in the UK.

“Just beyond was a lone male who had become trapped in a small bar of mud that runs along the beach.

“He had simply hit a rather soft patch of mud and become trapped. A bit of encouragement and a helping hand and he was free from the sticky stuff.

“He was very relieved and once we ensured he was not in any need of medical attention, he set off towards the showers to wash himself off, and his shoes, once our guys had prised them out of the mud.”
