A MAN was taken to hospital with head injuries following a fire in a Somerset village.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called at 5.40pm yesterday (Sun) to reports of a building on fire in Church Road, East Huntspill.

It sent three appliances from Burnham and Bridgwater to the scene along with a water carrier from Bridgwater.

When they arrived, firefighters discovered a store and a garage ablaze, along with two vehicles inside the garage. Fortunately, some cylinders which were in the garage had been removed before the crews got there.

Using hoses and jets, firefighters set about tackling the flames which caused extensive damage to the garage.

The ambulance service sent a rapid response vehicle and a regular ambulance to the scene, where a first responder also travelled to give immediate first aid.

The man taken to hospital was thought to be in his mid 50s.
