A ROYAL Marine cadet corps will be formed in Weston for the first time, following a successful nine-month trial.

Weston Sea Cadets have been given official permission from the movement’s head Captain Mark Windsor to set up a marine detachment.

The decision comes after a long-term trial, and will help cadets learn a host of new skills to help them on a road to a career in the armed forces.

Lieutenant Mick Fitch from the Weston group said: “Cadets will have the opportunity to learn new skills, such as camouflage and concealment, map-reading, field craft and weapons training, and gain qualifications in numerous specialist subjects.

“Because it is part of the sea cadet unit, there are all the water-borne activities such as sailing, canoeing and windsurfing too.”

Cadets have to be a minimum of 13 years old to join, with group meetings each Wednesday and Friday in Sunnyside Road.
