Market Cross repair work due to start

WORK is to start on Cheddar's historic Market Cross on Monday - meaning the return of the traffic lights which caused residents misery.

The Market Cross, a listed monument and a scheduled ancient structure, was damaged earlier this year when a taxi driver sneezed and smashed into it, destroying two pillars and leaving it in ruins.

When fencing was first put up around the structure, traffic lights along the A371 caused long tailbacks through the village.

Cheddar Parish Council has announced that the work will take eight weeks, but this time the lights will be manually controlled at busy times of the day.
