MORE than 4,000 people have registered objections with North Somerset Council against the planned expansion of Bristol International Airport. With only 100 letters of support, campaigners against the scheme are claiming it shows what they already knew.Georgie Bigg, a spokesman for the Stop Bristol Airport Expansion campaign, said: "There is massive local opposition to the plans. It also shows that, despite the airport's claims, few members of the public are going out of their way to support this development."The airport master plan, which includes doubling the size of the existing terminal, building a 180-bedroom hotel, increasing car parking spaces from 9,000 to about 17,800 and increasing passengers from six to nine million, will be discussed at a full meeting of North Somerset Council on Tuesday.Councillors Peter Kehoe and Isabel Cummings plan to appeal to colleagues to delay the plans until more information on pollution is provided. They said: "This council is concerned at the wide ranging discrepancies surrounding the master plan. There is no clearly established business case at local, regional or national level, nor has a clear and accepted environmental impact assessment been conducted."North Somerset Council will vote in favour or against the master plan today. The Government will have the final say as to whether the plans go ahead.
