WESTON General Hospital's maternity unit is being refurbished to improve the ward for mothers and babies.New en-suite bathroom facilities in the delivery and post-natal rooms, new bathrooms in the post-natal wards and new storage areas, ceilings and floors are being added to the facilities. While the work is being carried out throughout January the staff and patients will be moved into the new children's ward, the Seashore Centre, and signs will be up showing visitors where to go.The antenatal clinic and early pregnancy assessment clinic will remain on the second floor in Ashcombe Clinic. As soon as the maternity service can move back to its ward the Seashore Centre will open up.The Seashore Centre is the new children's ward which has been paid for by Weston Super Kids Appeal and supported by the Weston & Somerset Mercury.Chief executive Mark Gritten said: "We are fortunate that the timing of these moves means that maternity can occupy the Seashore Centre temporarily before the children and paediatric staff take it on permanently. "Because we can offer this alternative accommodation, maternity can stay open while the final parts of their refurbishment are completed - and hence, women who are booked in to give birth in Weston can still do so. As soon as maternity has vacated the Seashore Centre, and a deep clean has been carried out, the paediatric staff and patients will be able to move into their new home, which will be a keenly anticipated milestone in the history of this hospital.
