HEADSTONE testing started in Sedgemoor this week.

HEADSTONE testing started in Sedgemoor this week.

The district council will be testing the memorials in closed churchyards to see whether they are safe over the next few months.

Work was carried out at St John the Baptist Church in Axbridge, St Leonard's Church in Shipham and St Gregory's Church in Weare.

Each headstone is tested for safety and stability. If any stone is found to be potentially unsafe, the council will contact family members wherever possible to decide how to make the feature safe in the long term.

For new memorials, the grave or headstone should be under guarantee and the memorial mason who carried out the original installation should then correct any faults.

Work is scheduled for St Mary's Church in Wedmore from January 28.

Anyone with concerns or questions can call Sedgemoor District Council on 0845 4082540.
