PLANS for a memorial seat to a former Wedmore councillor have been opposed by a village resident. Wedmore Parish Council would like to buy a seat for Muriel Welch, who died on January 31, aged 84. Muriel had served as a parish councillor since 1979 .But a proposal to build a seat at the entrance to St Medard Road has been strongly opposed by a resident living opposite the site. Council chairman John Sanderson said: "There is a large grass verge there and it has been nicely planted by Wedmore In Bloom. It would be an ideal site for a bench. But we have received a verbal complaint which I am told will be put in writing. The person said they were concerned the bench would attract people to loiter about and youths in the village would make it their meeting place. "I don't agree that it will attract antisocial behaviour, but obviously benches are there for people to sit on. We have lots of other benches in the village that have not caused any issues." The parish council will seek permission for the bench.
