FROM Weston to the West End, and back again: One of the town's own has returned to film a TV programme partly based on her memories of the seaside resort.
Weston-born Michelle Terry is currently halfway through filming The Café in Weston, a sitcom she has co-written with former Royle Family star Ralf Little.
The 32-year-old former Priory Community School pupil grew up in Kewstoke, and her new venture, scheduled to air in the autumn, is set in the town she knows so well from her childhood.
After leaving Priory, Michelle studied at the former Broadoak Sixth Form Centre in Loxton Road before leaving North Somerset to study English literature at Cardiff University.
After graduating from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in 2004, Michelle made numerous appearances on stage in the West End, with the Royal National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company.
She has also appeared on Ricky Gervais’ TV comedy Extras, and Law and Order: UK.
In The Café, she plays Sarah, one of three members of a family running the eponymous diner, and provides a love interest to Ralf Little’s care home assistant character Richard.
Of the filming, she said: “It’s going really well at the moment. The café itself is a freebuild which was put up specially for us on the seafront, and we’ve also been filming at Barbara’s Hair Salon.
“When we were writing it, we thought about different places, but we really wanted to capture the local element of wherever we were filming, and it just made so much sense to do it in Weston.
“I brought Ralf down before we decided, and he loved it. The writing for it took about two-and-a-half years in total, and consisted of lots of different things before it grew into The Café.
“Because of the amazing views you can get from Weston, it just made sense to set the café on the seafront.
“It’s been great to be back here, even though some of the team who are from Manchester or London have had to get used to the Somerset accent.
“Even just walking around the town, and being here again has been great. We’ve all had a lot of fun filming so far, and Ralf has been getting some musical help off (Weston musician) Adam Lipinski, who is a friend.”
The Café, which is directed by another former Royle Family star, Craig Cash, will air on Sky 1 this autumn.
