Milestone birthday celebrated
A WOMAN who has eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren was surrounded by family as she celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.
Dorothy Bloxsome went for a cavery at The Royal Hotel in Weston-super-Mare with her daughter Christine, son Paul and all but one of her grandchildren – with the final one sending his best wishes from Bahrain.
Dorothy is a resident at Park House care home in Weston, but lived alone until the age of 98.
Her daughter, Christine, said: “She is such a gentle soul. We can make her laugh very, very easily, which is lovely.
“She just takes things as they come and never complains.”
Dorothy grew up in Cheltenham where her family ran a pub. Christine said: “Her father served in World War One and died when she was six, so her mother was left with four children and a pub to run. So she was mummy’s helper I think, she had quite an upbringing.”
She then went on to work as a superintendent in a typing school, but Christine thinks her love of work is just one of the secrets of reaching such a grand old age, and said: “She doesn’t drink, she doesn’t smoke, she’s just happy.
“She absolutely loved her birthday, particularly the card from The Queen – she hasn’t let it go yet.”
