A primary school in Weston-super-Mare is hoping Go Kids Go! will give it a grant to buy new sports equipment for its pupils.
Milton Park Primary School has applied for a slice of the scheme’s £9,000 funding pot, and if successful it will use the money to buy either table tennis, archery, or tri-golf equipment.
The school is hoping for a grant of either £1,200, to pay for four table tennis sets, or £834 which could pay for equipment so it can teach its students how to shoot with a bow and arrow during archery sessions or learn to play golf with miniature tri-golf equipment.
The school’s physical education (PE) lead Dan Hartley said: “We would like to increase the variety of sports and activities we can offer to improve the opportunities we can provide for our children to take part in sport and have an active lifestyle.
“We would like to provide extra equipment in less mainstream sports to encourage a larger amount of children to get involved in sport.”
The school, in Milton Park Road, has 393 students and the equipment will not only be used in their PE lessons, but will also be available for them to use during after-school clubs and at lunchtimes.
Go Kids Go! is in its sixth year and has given away £60,000 since its launched to encourage children to get active and involved in group activities.
It is run by Weston Lions Club and the Mercury and is sponsored by donations from many of the town’s businesses.
It funds individuals, clubs and not-for-profit organisations which work with children and young people 18 years old and under.
People can apply for a grant of up to £2,000 and previous Go Kids Go! winners can re-apply this year.
You can download a Go Kids Go! application form here or pick one up an application form from the Mercury office.
Applications must be submitted to email@example.com or Go Kids Go!, Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury, 32 Waterloo Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1LW by July 19.
The judges will meet shortly after and winners will be announced in the Mercury on July 27 before being handed their cheques at Weston Lions Club’s Real Ale Festival on the Beach Lawns on July 30.
