A Milton woman is soon setting off on the biggest physical test of her life in the hope of raising £2,000 for charity.

Bettina Williams, of Milton, is walking 100km from Plymouth to Brighton in what she describes as ‘the challenge of a lifetime’.

Bettina, aged 36, is walking Oxfam’s Trailwalker route across the South Downs, which must be completed in 30 hours or less – although she aims to finish it in 25 hours.

The Trailwalker challenge is taking place on July 22-24 and starts on Queen Elizabeth Park in Portsmouth and finishes at the racecourse in Brighton.

It is organised by the Queen’s Gherka Signals and all money raised goes to Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust, which funds a number of projects, including building lavatories for people who live in hill villages in Nepal which were struck by earthquakes in April 2015.

Bettina, who is a primary school teacher, will be joined by friends from Bristol during the gruelling hike, including Ming-Li Bogue and Nadine Siebdrat.

She said: “We have set ourselves the challenge because we are passionate to make a small difference to people’s lives who are less fortunate than us.

“Training started three months ago and we have just completed a 30km walk on Saturday along the Offa’s Dyke in Wales and a 26km walk in the Mendips on Sunday.

“The next challenge is 35km. We want to complete in 25 hours on the day and are involving our husbands in the preparations.

“Our husbands, Jamie Williams, Andre Mueller and Russel Bogue, will be the support team on the day, looking after us at checkpoints, providing us with food and keeping us motivated.

“We are called team Globetrotters because we are from all parts of the world. We never lose sight of the cause, to make a difference.”
