‘Mindless vandals’ destroy tree planted for boy, 5

A Weston-super-Mare mum has been left ‘distraught’ after vandals destroyed a tree which was planted to mark the birth of her son.
Emily Burnell, aged 38, of Locking, planted the tree in Ashcombe Park for her son, Finnley, aged five.
She said: “I saw it on August 12 just lying by its stump – someone had tried to Sellotape it back together. To say I am distraught is an understatement.
“I haven’t been able to tell my son yet, he loved that he had his own tree in the park – how do you explain to a five-year-old that someone hacked his tree to bits?
“It’s just sad a tree has been mindlessly destroyed.”
North Somerset Council has agreed to re-plant the tree under its commemorative planting scheme and Emily is now waiting for final details of a planting date.
