WORSHIPPERS in Portishead will be able to enjoy communion wine made from grapes growing in the church's millennium garden. The vine was grown from a cutting given by the Bishop Roger Sainsbury when he moved to the town in 2002 and planted in the special garden at St Peter's Church.A large crop of grapes was harvested by children at the church and given to the town's champion wine maker and church reader Mike Charnick who made it into a fine red wine. Worshippers at the church have now been sampling the wine at communion services. The Rev Alan Taylor said: "The vine was planted up against the south wall of the millennium garden and grew vigorously last year and produced a large crop of grapes."The children harvested the grapes and we gave them to Mr Charnick who has made them into wine. I have tasted his wine before and it is beautiful and was certainly enjoyed by all at the church."Over the years Bishop Roger has handed out hundreds of cuttings to people he has confirmed.* Pictured: The Rev Alan Taylor and wine maker Mike Charnick.
