YOUTH workers will be out and about in Backwell on Friday evenings this summer in a bid to attract youngsters to the village's youth club.Backwell Parish Council's drop-in centre and street project used to operate from the youth club building on the village's recreation ground on Friday evenings. But residents living in, and near, Rodney Road complained they were plagued by antisocial behaviour on those nights. So in December, parish councillors decided to close the drop-in centre and the street project, which were set up almost a decade before in a bid to reduce vandalism in the village, with immediate effect.Since then, attendance at the youth club, which is open on Mondays and Fridays, from 7-9.30pm has tailed off.So this summer, youth workers will be walking round the village on Friday evenings to encourage young people to come along to the youth club when it re-opens in September.Kevin Sweeney, area manager for youth clubs across North Somerset, said: "The youth club will not be open on Friday nights during the summer."There is no intention to open the youth club on Friday evenings."There may be some youth workers out and about in the village, perhaps one Friday in four, promoting the club and encouraging young people to attend it when it re-opens in September."They will simply be talking to young people in a bid to drum up business on Monday and Wednesday evenings."Secretary of Backwell Youth Club's management committee, and parish councillor Beverley Cook, said: "During the last six months, only 10-15 young people have been attending Backwell Youth Club."When the street project was open, word got round that the youth club was open on Mondays and Wednesdays."Now there are not many young people coming along to the youth club.
