TALKS with North Somerset Council officers have offered businessmen who want to save Weston’s Tropicana some direction with their plan.

Trop (WSM) Ltd, headed by Puxton Park owner Derek Mead, met with Karuna Tharmananthar, assistant director of development and environment, and property strategy manager Martin O’Neill on Tuesday.

An application to demolish the former pool has been sent by the council to the Secretary of State, who will make the final decision within the next 12 weeks. The application has also been added to the council’s south area planning application list, with a target deadline for a decision for June 13.

Mr Mead said the main factor which officers want improved in the group’s regeneration plan is car parking around the site.

He said: “We are going to do some further work so we can prove the need for more parking is not only essential for the Trop, but for the seafront and the tourism of Weston.

“We are not going to take the spaces that are already there.”

Mr Mead also said the group has been advised by the Secretary of State to put in an offer, to the council, for the site.

He said: “We have offered to buy it for £1 to take on the liability and to save on the cost of the demolition.”
