More year-round events to help boost Weston trade

WESTON'S Business Improvement District (BID) chairman says he wants to help deliver more events to the town following the success of this weekend's Pro Nationals festival preview.
Crowds flocked to the seafront for the return of the spectacular festival on Sunday, with many staying throughout the day to catch sight of a town fireworks display at 9pm.
BID chairman Paul Batts said that he had been encouraged by the turnout on an already-busy bank holiday weekend, and that he hoped to help make similar events more commonplace around the town centre.
He revealed the group has recently appointed an events co-ordinator to help give tourists an all-year-round incentive to visit the resort.
Mr Batts said: “The more regular events we can put on, the better it will be for everyone involved. Being a part of the Red Bull show was great and that extra footfall would have been very helpful to business here.
“If they are in the summer people are already going to be coming to Weston because it’s a visit to the seaside, but we want to give people an excuse to visit out of season and have things running in October, for instance.”
Tutto’s was one of the businesses to benefit from added custom with the festival on its doorstep, and manager Chris Boyd said that he would welcome more utilisation of the seafront.
He said: “I think this end of town gets left out sometimes, it’s a great place for events and I believe that it should be used more. It’s such a useful space and people should be encouraged to the sea front.
“Even at Christmas everything goes towards the Sovereign Shopping Centre end of town and benefits them more than us, it becomes almost a close down in winter around here, so more events would be very welcome.”
