Motorcycle run to move from town

A CHARITY motorcycle run which has finished in Weston for the last 27 years will not be returning to the town in future due to an 'unacceptable increase' in the cost to park on the Beach Lawns.
Westland Motorcycle Club’s annual Coast To Coast ride raises money for Headway Somerset, which provides help and assistance to people with brain injuries.
Two years ago, riders were charged £25 to park on the Beach Lawns for a couple of hours, but this year, the charge had trebled to £75.
Richard Dampier, who organises the event, said: “Two years ago we were thanked for our support to Weston by being levied with a £25 charge.
“Although we were not happy with this we begrudgingly paid this as we wanted to keep the association with Weston for historic reasons if nothing else.
“However, this year our support to Weston has cost the charity a 200 per cent increase in the charge, up to £75, which for any service is an incredible and unacceptable increase, particularly when considering the lack of local facilities.”
He said the club had a good following, with people from Weston attending to meet friends they have made in previous years.
He said: “Along with the 300 plus participants, these people have brought their custom and associated benefits to the local businesses.”
Mr Dampier said the club would now be looking for an alternative venue to Weston as it is the only venue where they are charged.
A council spokesman said charities receive a highly subsidised rate, with commercial operations charged £300 a day for events on the Beach Lawns.
He said: “They were made aware of the increase last time and knew what the charge would be this time around.”
