Mudflats rescue practice

RESCUE crews from Burnham simulated saving a person stuck in the mud at Berrow this week.
The teams from Burnham Coastguard and the Burnham Area Rescue Boat hovercraft (BARB) staged the rescue on Sunday, in preparation for the anticipated busy summer season.
A coastguard team member was pulled from the mudflats, one of the sites considered most dangerous for anyone walking in the area.
Mark Newman, BARB chairman, said: “We have a similar major training session every year to prepare all of our volunteer crew members because we have had many incidents of this kind in the past, unfortunately. It was a timely reminder of the danger that does lie there because the mud has become very treachorous again. We don’t want to put off holiday makers visiting the area, the number of people visiting compared to those who get into trouble is very small, it just takes a little bit of caution.”
