Students at Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar are gearing up for the 2008 Rotary Club Cheddar Valley Young Musician of the Year competition.

Rotary Club of Mendip and the school's music department have joined forces for the annual event.

Soloists and ensembles will be playing in five age categories, hoping to impress the judges.

Auditions were held on March 15 and the finalists will take part in a grand concert on April 27 in the school hall at 7pm.

Headteacher Chris Richardson said: "I am delighted we are again hosting this exciting musical event. Every year the standard of musical virtuosity is impressive."

Tickets for the concert, priced £3.50, are available from the school office.
