A HIGHBRIDGE sports centre is set to take centre stage in raising the profile of volleyball in the South West.

King Alfred’s Sports Centre has been approached by Volleyball England to become a regional hub for the training and development of the sport.

The centre was chosen because of its good location and motorway links, as well as a £50,000 refit funded by Somerset Leisure earlier this year.

The centre’s assistant manager, Toni McKinlay, thinks the centre will be a big boost to the entire community: “It was a wonderful honour to be asked to play such a major role in promoting what is a very popular local sport.

Volleyball is a core sport for the school here and the matches will give local pupils the opportunity to see the sport played at a top level. It may inspire some future England stars from here in Highbridge.”

There will be an opportunity to see future England volleyball stars at the centre when it hosts the first of a series of National Championship Under 16 and Under 18 matches on Sunday from 1pm-5pm, and again on Sunday 28 from 1-6pm. Entry is free.
