EXTRA eyes and ears have been recruited in the Cheddar area for the fight against crime.Police are pioneering a new scheme to make sure people know about crime quicker than ever before to help make communities even safer. When officers want to warn residents in the area about crimes they can now quickly communicate the information through a network of people in area, so the warnings get where they need to be quicker.Organisations such as councils, care homes and housing associations have signed up to the scheme, called Safer Homes in Somerset. When police officers want to give out information, such as witness appeals, warning people to be on guard or crime prevention advice, they can tell someone in one of the organisations and they will tell everyone they represent.Police hope this way information will get where it needs to be quicker, and ultimately cut back crime. Residents in the Cheddar area can also view the alerts on the Safer Homes in Somerset web site www.saferhomesinsomerset.org.ukDCI Damian Kearney said: "By working with our partner organisations, we are able to quickly issue appeals and information direct to large numbers of people.
