A BRAND new £2million skills centre looks set to be built in Nailsea.Weston College, North Somerset Council and schools have joined forces in a bid to make vocational training more accessible in the north of the district. In November, the college submitted an outline proposal to the Learning and Skills Council West of England, asking it to help fund the project. The organisation, which plans all education and training for those aged over 16, with the exception of university students, has just announced it will contribute £1million towards its cost. The college will borrow the rest of the money it needs to build the skills centre which will be located in Somerset Square and is expected to welcome its first students in September 2007.Weston College's principal, Dr Paul Phillips, said: "We want to use the Jamie Oliver concept of teaching at the skills centre. If we are teaching catering, it will be taught in a working restaurant, which will be something quite new for colleges."The centre will be a facility for the schools, who supported the bid fully, and for the community, help to create a skilled workforce and increase the range of work-based learning options we provide."People from the north of the district have said it's difficult to get into Weston for courses, so we have decided to build the skills centre in Nailsea."Computing, catering, construction, beauty therapy and hairdressing are likely to be among the subjects on offer at the skills centre. The students the centre will cater for will range from 14-year-olds, undertaking courses while still at school, to adults. It is hoped that the building will feature a community learning resource centre where residents would be able to use computers and log onto the Internet.
