New awards launched to celebrate Weston-super-Mare's heroes - and it needs YOUR nominations

A new scheme to celebrate Weston's community champions has been launched today (Thursday) and needs you to nominate your neighbourhood heroes.
Community Champions of Weston is a new scheme sponsored by the Nightingale Group and run in partnership with the Mercury which aims to celebrate the very best people in the town.
More than 21 million people volunteer nationwide each year and dozens of charities, organisations and individuals in Weston rely on the incredible support of volunteers.
But, the scheme is not just open to volunteers – people can nominate a friendly neighbour who volunteers to cook them a meal, a young teenager who helps elderly people to cross the road, someone who has raised money for charity or supported a friend or relative through a difficult time – the possibilities are endless.
Managing director of the Nightingale Group, Richard Nightingale, said he wants the scheme to be ‘as open as possible’.
He said: “We want anybody who has done something helpful and supportive to their community to be included, we have a really broad scope.
“This is all about celebrating those people who might not normally get recognition for doing something which has added value to individuals and our community.”
The Community Champions Awards will be held twice a year, with the first awards ceremony due to take place on April 22, at 10am.
Nominations can be submitted now and the scheme’s judges – Richard Nightingale, Mercury editor Simon Angear, Weston’s MP John Penrose, chief executive officer of Voluntary Action North Somerset Cara McMahon, chief executive of Knightstone Housing Nick Horne and a member of Weston’s Youth Council – will meet at the end of March to make their decision on the final winners.
Between now and the awards ceremony the Mercury will showcase the scheme’s nominations to celebrate Weston’s community champions.
To nominate someone send your name, telephone number and email address with your reasons for your nomination to firstname.lastname@example.org If possible, please include a photograph of the person you are nominating and ensure they will be free to attend the awards ceremony on April 22, at 10am. The deadline for nominations is March 20.
