OLDER people in the Weston area will have the opportunity to get together on a weekly basis thanks to a new initiative.

The Community Connect Café will be open at Emmanuel Church in Oxford Street every Monday between 10am and 12noon from June 13.

Organisations including Age UK Somerset, Liberata, the Centre for the Deaf and Avon and Fire Rescue Service.

People will be able to get advice, as well as tea and biscuits, for a nominal charge.

The morning will also feature a demonstration of country dancing by Walliscote Primary School pupils.

The café has been developed via a joint initiative between Emmanuel Church, Age UK Somerset and North Somerset Council.

Justin Parsons, of Age UK Somerset, said: “The café represents a great opportunity for older people to find a welcoming venue where they can not only enjoy a cup of tea and a chat, but also get free advice on a wide range of older people’s issues.

“Crucial things such as housing and benefits, as well as social activities, clubs and exercise opportunities.”
