New cemetery site in Banwell

PUBLISHED: 18:00 05 May 2011

WORK is underway to open a new cemetery in Banwell as space runs out for burials in the village’s existing one.

The parish council is considering a second cemetery on land off Towerhead Road, close to the established cemetery off Church Street.

Members visited the site, owned by a villager, last month and are now asking North Somerset Council if it is appropriate for the proposed use.

If the district authority agrees, negotiations with the landowner will continue and a site survey undertaken.

The village’s existing cemetery was opened in the late 1950s but is approaching its capacity.

The council carries out general maintenance of the burial land, recently resurfacing paths and opening a remembrance garden.
