AN OLD school building in Worle is set to become a new children's centre.North Somerset Council plans to turn the former Mendip Green First School buildings in Mendip Avenue into a centre for children, teenagers and parents. The Victorian buildings became redundant when the school's new extension opened at the other end of the site. One half of the buildings, which will be retained and refurbished, will be for children up to four years old and their parents. The other half will be for young people. The centre will house a range of facilities including health and social services, children's charities, youth workers and a creche.Architects are drawing up plans for the centre this week and itcould be open by April 2007.Councillor Astra Brand, who represents Old Worle, is pushing for the centre to include a separate area for teenagers.Cllr Brand said: "We have nothing, absolutely zilch, in Worle and Milton for youngsters. There are no cinemas or clubs except school-run ones."Barcode Youth Cafe in Weston town centre is great, but it generally attracts the sort of kids who go to youth clubs anyway. "The teenagers who hang out on street corners want somewhere less organised to go."I've spoken to them many times about what would work and they want somewhere to meet or drop in and sit and chat to their friends over a coffee or soft drink."It is the boredom of standing around on the streets that causes trouble."If we had a facility like this we would have less trouble."Years ago the problems we have now didn't happen because there were coffee bar style places to hang out in."Worle Children's Centre will be one of 11 built around North Somerset, eight of which will be open by April 2008.
