A NEW choir has been launched in Milton to help immigrants learn English and integrate into the community.

The aim of the new group is to bring people together from all walks of life and from different ethnic groups in the Weston area to enjoy their love of singing.

There are no auditions and no experience is necessary, just loads of enthusiasm.

Musical director Bill Stagg said: “Several supporters and some founding members work with ethnic groups and some teach English as a second language, so they know the value of a choir as a meaningful social gathering and point out how valuable singing is as a means of improving language skills.

“With this in mind it is hoped that a particularly varied and characterful group will develop to share the joy of music that, as we all know, reaches across all borders and languages and provides a wonderful sense of sharing and belonging.”

The choir will be run as a co-operative of its members. It is hoped that the charge can be limited to £1 per session.

The first meeting is being held tonight (Thursday) at 7.30pm at St Jude’s Hall, St Peter’s Church in Baytree Road. For more information call 01934 413571.
