A Somerset man has retired as a parish council clerk after more than 20 years of service.

Alan Parfitt, aged 79, has worked on parish councils around the area for 24 years since retiring from his full-time job with BT.

Most recently, Mr Parfitt has worked with the Weare authority for the past 11 years, but he has now decided to call time on his career.

He said: “When I retired at the age of 56, I wanted something else to do to fill my time.

“I am involved with a number of things, like the church. I have a love for my fellow man and like to help them when I can.

“When I started the clerk role I just fell in love with it.”

Mr Parfitt previously helped at the local Cheshire Home before applying for his first clerk job.

The council is looking for a new clerk to start at the end of October. All enquiries should go to alanparfitt1@btinternet.com
