A FARM on the outskirts of Portishead has answered a call from residents who have been without a butcher in the town for several years.

Shipway Gate Farm at Sheepway, on the edge of The Vale housing development, has opened a farm shop selling a range of meat and poultry to the public.

Farmer's daughter, Jo Crossman, said: "When the butchers shop in the town closed some years ago there was a public outcry.

"People get by purchasing their meat from the supermarkets but it's not the same as a local butcher shop.

"I decided to set up 'Sheepway Meats' to sell directly to the public from the farm here.

"We sell our own pork - Gloucester Old Spot - and lamb, and beef from other local farms. I'd like to sell our own beef at some time in the future. We also sell local eggs and poultry."

The farm shop is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30am-5.30pm. The butcher Paul Clavey is in each morning and Jo runs the shop in the afternoons. For further information call 01275 842216.
