n A WESTON mum has started a new group to raise awareness of the benefits of keeping your child close to you.

Katie Richards, of Locking Road, has set up North Somerset Slings, which is a project that has been set up to support and educate parents and the community on ‘babywearing’.

Babywearing is the practice of carrying an infant in a sling or baby carrier, an ancient tradition used by many cultures around the world.

The support group meets on the first and last Thursday of the month, from 10-11.30am, at Vintage Community Church in Hughenden Road, Weston.

Katie, who is studying for a masters in psychology of education, worked for North Somerset Youth Service until she had her daughter.

The 29-year-old said: “I wanted to set this up because when my daughter was younger and I needed support and advice on babywearing, there was nothing locally.”
