A NEW leader will take the helm at a Somerset council this month after its former leader stepped down to run for a top police post.

Cllr John Osman, currently deputy leader of Somerset County Council, has replaced Ken Maddock, as front man of the Conservative group.

He will be formally elected leader of the council on May 16.

Cllr David Hall is expected to succeed Cllr Osman as deputy leader.

Mr Maddock last month announced he had stepped down as council leader to run for the post of Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner.
