WORK is set to begin at the end of May to create Backwell's new recycling centre.Large corrugated workshops and other structures at the former Coles Quarry site, where it will be located, have been removed.Next month, members of North Somerset Council's executive are due to consider tenders from companies keen to put in place the facilities, such as custom-built bays, which the new civic amenity site will require. If the councillors approve one of the bids, the work is expected to begin at the end of the month, and it is anticipated the new site will open towards the end of September. Cllr Deborah Yamanaka said: "Residents will soon be able to benefit from a larger site that will be easier to use and have better recycling facilities."The district council is replacing the current civic amenity site, at Cheston Combe, due to poor access and lack of space. The recycling centre was originally due to open this month, but North Somerset Council said 'a particularly complex tendering process' and having to meet all the planning consent criteria had led to the delay. The proposal to create the recycling centre sparked controversy in the village.Residents, worried about road safety, traffic congestion, an increase in noise levels, and extended opening hours, formed a campaign group to oppose it.
