A JUNIOR football team from Portishead is celebrating the arrival of its new football kit just in time for their first sporting tour to Spain.

Gordano Valley Rangers under-14s made a plea last month to local businesses to sponsor a new kit in time for their journey to Cehegin in Murcia next week to play a number of fixtures.

Portishead businessman, Mike Young, who is a sports and manual therapist, specialising in sports injuries, offered the sponsorship the team were looking for to provide the kits.

"I'm pleased to be able to help these youngsters" said Mike. "A week away playing sport in a different country will involve a great deal of character building.

"I think it is important for young people to do things like this, it's great experience for them and I hope they will forge some good friendships as well as enjoy the football."

The team, which plays in the Woodspring Junior League, has funded the tour by packing customers' bags in local stores and organising various fundraising events.

Gordano Valley Rangers manager Julian Eastoe said: "This is the first time the team has been on tour and all the players are really excited.

"It will be fantastic to see the boys go out and represent their country looking smart in new kit. We can't thank Mike Young enough."

The team, which has been running for six years, trains at Gordano School once a week and plays matches against other junior sides each Sunday.
