POLICE were out in force in a Somerset village on New Year's Eve, one year on from the death of a man killed there after a fight.
James Hewlett, aged 24, was hit on the head and knocked to the ground during an incident in Cheddar in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2011, suffering a brain haemorrhage.
Samuel Binning, aged 21, later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was jailed for 23 months.
Three special constables were on patrol in the village on December 31 to help ensure there was no repeat of last year’s tragic events.
There was a small scuffle in The Bays which saw one man charged with common assault, but otherwise the night passed largely without incident.
PC Kat Forrest said: “New Year went pretty well and other than the incident in The Bays there were no real issues.”
