A WELL-KNOWN composer from Weston has been commissioned to create a piece of music dedicated to the Queen Mother.Nigel Hess, who has composed music for more than 100 television programmes and films, has met with Prince Charles to discuss the piano concerto, which will be premiered next month at a concert dedicated to his grandmother. The event will take place in Castle Acre, an historic town in Norfolk close to the Sandringham Estate, which was where the Queen Mother attended her last concert before she died. The soloist at the concert will be the internationally-renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang.Nigel, who composed the music for the much-acclaimed film Ladies in Lavender, is currently scoring a new ballet based on a children's story written by Prince Charles called The Old Man of Lochnagar. It will be premiered by the National Youth Ballet at Sadlers Wells in London in October. The Prince of Wales suggested Nigel should compose the music when he was asked for permission to create a ballet based on the book by the National Youth Ballet's director Jill Tookey.Following the success of a concert held at London's Cadogan Hall called 'The Food of Love' featuring music composed by Nigel for the Royal Shakespeare Company while he was its music director, performed by Judi Dench, Patrick Stewart and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Nigel was asked to present the concert as an after-dinner entertainment for around 160 guests at Buckingham Palace. On this occasion Nigel conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra with presenters Dame Diana Rigg, Robert Lindsay and Patricia Routledge.Nigel was born in Weston and his father John lives in Milton Road.
