A LONG-STANDING businessman from Weston has been honoured with an MBE for his work helping charities in the region.

Roger Nightingale, who established the Nightingale Group in 1961, was honoured by the Queen for his commitment to helping improve the quality of people’s lives in the town.

This year Mr Nightingale collected more than 3,000 Christmas presents for underprivileged children, and he hopes to exceed the number next year.

He said: ”I was shocked and honoured to receive notification of this award.

“I have considered it a privilege and an honour to be involved with many charities right across the region. Their only consideration is to help the needy in our society and to generally improve the quality of peoples lives.

“Frankly I do feel undeserving of such an award, when compared to the many hundreds of other volunteers, working tirelessly for charities across North Somerset.”
