COUNCIL tax benefit will be abolished in North Somerset in April.

It will be replaced with a local council tax support scheme.

Council tax benefit is a national welfare benefit scheme that helps people on a low incomes to pay their council tax for the homes they live in.

From April all councils in the country will have to replace it with their own scheme.

The Government has also said that it will no longer fully fund the new scheme and plans to reduce the money it gives to councils.

The local scheme includes protection for pensioners, but there is due to be a reduction in grants for working age individuals.

North Somerset councillors voted on whether to approve the local council tax support scheme and it was passed by a majority on Tuesday evening.
