North Somerset Council is the best in region for childcare funding.

NORTH Somerset Council has been praised for its childcare funding levels.

More than 80 per cent of eligible two-year-olds are benefitting from free childcare in the district – 17 per cent higher than the national average.

The council is the best performing authority in the South West when it comes to encouraging take-up and the Government wrote a letter to its chief executive Mike Jackson to acknowledge its work.

Executive member for children and young people’s services Colin Hall said: “I would like to thank our early years team, health colleagues, childcare providers and other professionals for their hard work to help people access the free early-learning sessions they are entitled to.

“It has placed us top of the South West and 10th out of 152 local authorities nationally in terms of the take-up of these funded places.”
