Plans to add homes to a development in Winscombe have got the go ahead, despite fierce opposition.
Six houses are set to be built on the edge of The Chestnuts after North Somerset Council members approved the application.
The decision came despite the planning committee on November 14 being told 60 trees will need to be torn down.
Cllr Ann Harley, passionately, called on fellow councillors to reject the ‘depressing’ proposal.
She said: “It is totally out of character... it’s overbearing.
“The wildlife corridor will be destroyed.”
Cllr Tom Leimdorfer echoed her fears, saying four-bedroom homes are not what Winscombe needs, adding those proposed were being ‘shoe-horned’ into an unacceptable plot.
Dozens of villagers submitted objections to the plan as well.
However, the majority of councillors supported the authority’s planners view and gave the scheme the green light.
Woodstock Homes will need to submit an ecology report to the council before work can start.
