Plans for 66 homes to be built on the edge of Yatton, which would ‘destroy’ a historic orchard, have been turned down by North Somerset Council this afternoon (Wednesday).

Persimmon Homes' scheme to build on former junior rugby pitches off Moor Road was almost unanimously opposed at Weston Town Hall.

The chief concern was the developer's wish to build an access road and a play area in the historic orchard, which villager Judith Cockram said would 'destroy' important hedgerows and trees.

Cllr Wendy Griggs, who represents Yatton for the local authority, said surrounding roads were unsuitable for a large influx in cars.

She said Moor Road and Kenn Moor Road often are subjected to travel 'chaos'.

Cllr Ann Harley added: "I have great sympathy with Yatton and I think a lot of villages are being attacked and I make no apology for saying that.

"Yatton is a village and it's becoming a small town."

Officers at the council did feel the scheme was acceptable and because members went against their recommendation, it will come back to the committee for confirmation in July.
