PLANS to build a complex of retirement flats on the site of a former garage in Clevedon have raised concerns among councillors.Developer McCarthy and Stone has applied to North Somerset Council for permission to build the retirement development at Arriva Vauxhall's former premises at 54 Old Church Road. The scheme would include 40 flats for the over 60s and 13 parking spaces. The two and three-storey building will feature a laundry, guest room and a communal lounge. A manager will live on site to oversee the day-to-day running of the complex. But councillors have said they are concerned at the lack of parking and say residents and visitors to the complex will be forced to leave their cars in the side roads.Clevedon town council environment and planning committee chairman John Norton-Sealey said: "There is not enough parking included in this development."People living in Hillside Road already suffer with staff from the PCT building and visitors to The Curzon using their street as a car park."This will only get worse with this new development."We were also concerned about an elderly people's development being on a main road."Clevedon Town Council chairman David Shopland said he wanted to see affordable homes for young families built on the site.Cllr Shopland said: "We need to take care of our rising generation and start catering for young people and bring new life into the town."We have ample housing developments for the elderly."The application will now go before North Somerset council for a final decision.
