Police in North Somerset have launched a trial number plate amnesty in a bid to recover the registration plates. They will be putting special collection bins at North Somerset's police stations, including Weston, for people to give back stolen number plates. In 2005 more than 50 number plates were taken, and this year over a 100 were taken between April and October from unattended or parked vehicles. Most were stolen for pranks but some have been used criminally to mask the original number plates to steal fuel at petrol stations. People with information about stolen number plates should call Weston CID on 0845 4567000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
