NURSES are literally in tears at work because of changes at Weston General Hospital, said one patient. The patient, who has been hospitalised for several weeks and did not want to be identified, said they had seen several nurses crying on the Cheddar Ward. The patient's partner, who did not want to be named, told the Weston & Somerset Mercury: "The nurses are so busy they are running from person to person. I asked why they don't walk out. They said how could they?"I think something's going to go radically wrong. Something's going to explode there and I hope it doesn't affect my husband."Several nurses have just walked out of their jobs and lost their redundancy money."Staff and bed numbers have been reduced at the Grange Road site to help balance the hospital's books. But beds have been brought back into use following an exceptionally busy period - a record 274 people needed emergency treatment last week.A hospital spokesman said: "It is the case that where staff have worked with ward managers for a number of years, they have been upset by the personnel changes. "But since then staff have met with matrons and been reassured and a new structure is now in operation. "At the board meeting this week members recognised that this had been a difficult period for staff and thanked them for their support and co-operation throughout.
