WESTON College principal Dr Paul Phillips says he is ‘shocked but very pleased’ to have been appointed OBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Dr Phillips received the distinction for services to further education and to the voluntary sector.

He told the Mercury: “I feel that I have had the opportunity in Weston to work on some very exciting projects both within the college and the North Somerset community.

“I’m proud to be associated with the development of the college and voluntary sector and have worked with some amazing people.”

Dr Phillips, who has been principal and chief executive of the college for 10 years, paid tribute to his colleagues and said he is receiving the honour on behalf of his ‘managers, staff and governors’.

He said during his time at the college he has been proud to work with a number of organisation and highlights the staffing restructure and development of the university campus as positive steps taken to secure the college’s future.

Dr Phillips said there will be a lot of challenges to overcome as concerns for higher education mount – but said he is determined to continue providing ‘sustainable education and learning opportunities’ for people in the area.
