There are few jobs which require as much bravery as being a firefighter, but not all emergencies are a case of life and death.

New figures released this week show the surprising number of unorthodox call-outs Avon Fire and Rescue Service receives.

During the 2017-18 financial year, fire crews were sent multiple times a week to rescue animals, with 126 calls to such incidents.

And during the same timeframe, the service attended 81 cases where people needed items removed.

While often that involved cutting off a stuck wedding ring, the fire service has in the past had to free people from toy cars and toilet seats.

The Home Office data also shows firefighters were called out 261 times in cases of flooding, which includes rivers bursting their banks or pipes breaking, and 19 times to rescue people from water.

There were also 208 false alarms with good intentions, plus seven which were considered to be of a malicious nature.
