'HARASSING' letters are being sent to pensioners demanding they pay their council tax after a change in the payment system.Dozens of senior citizens in North Somerset have been sent the letter terminating their monthly council tax payment scheme and threatening a court summons if the full amount for the year is not paid. The letters were sent out by Liberata, acting for the district council if payments were not made within three weeks of the start of the month.Payments were changed to the start of the month in April last year.Weston Senior Citizen Forum says the letters are harassing and some of its members do not get their pensions until the end of the month.Forum chairman Ken Lacey said: "A lot of people have received one of these letters and been quite upset by it."To an old lady of 84 it scares the wits out of them when they receive a letter like this."It's intimidating, bordering on the verge of harassment and extremely alarming."Pensioners are the type of people who can't afford to pay until they receive their pension at the end of the month."They have paid their bills all their lives and now they can't for a few weeks because the change of date has mucked up their system."A spokesman for North Somerset Council said the system had been changed to allow people a calendar month to pay before sending letter and the council is happy to discuss payments with anyone having problems.
