A FED up Portishead woman said she was forced to wait an hour in a queue to take rubbish to Backwell tip.Reyna Knight, of Cabstand, was stuck in traffic for 60 minutes as she waited to dump a fridge freezer and other items at the Cheston Coombe civic amenity site.Mrs Knight was forced to take her items to the Backwell facility following the closure of the civic amenity site at Black Rock Quarry on safety grounds.Mrs Knight said: "There was traffic queuing right out of the site."My husband and I went because we had an old fridge and wanted to dispose of it responsibly."There were people with trailers who were going in and blocking the exit and people trying to get out who were snarling up the traffic."It was absolute chaos."North Somerset was forced to close the Valley Road tip last month after safety concerns about the rock face. And it is likely the tip will remain closed until at least August because of nesting peregrine falcons on the rockface.Mrs Knight, who is standing as an independent candidate for west ward in the forthcoming elections, then travelled to Weston-super-Mare civic amenity site where the waiting time was 20 minutes to deposit rubbish. She added: "The congestion caused by the layout of the site was an added problem."People from the Portishead area are only going to undertake the journey to Backwell or Weston-super-Mare once, if that, and from then on we all will be subjected to fly tipping to the detriment of the countryside and its inhabitants."Surely the pull in site next to the North Somerset tip could be utilised with a few containers that could be emptied regularly, or if a larger site is required renting some land adjacent to the tip as a temporary measure."Fly tipping costs the tax payer money whereas forward planning, something our council does not seem to undertake, is not within the remit of the council."North Somerset Council spokesman Richard Turner admitted the tip was busy but it was normally at this time of year.
